Decoded: What Your SIP Confirmation Email Isn't Telling You

Every month, a small transactional email lands in your inbox: units allotted, NAV, folio number, done. It's accurate, it's compliant, and it's telling you almost nothing about whether your SIP is actually working.

What the email actually shows you

Dear Investor,
Your SIP instalment of Rs. 5,000.00 has been processed.
Units Allotted: 41.267
NAV: 121.1420
Folio No: 123456789

That's the entire picture, by design — it's a transaction receipt, not a portfolio review. It confirms the mechanics worked. It says nothing about the mechanics mattering.

Three things missing from every SIP confirmation

Your actual return (XIRR), not the fund's return. A fund's published "3-year return" describes a lumpsum invested three years ago in one shot. Your SIP put in money on a different date every month, at a different NAV every time — your real, personal return is a completely different number, and no confirmation email ever shows it to you. Two people in the exact same fund, started six months apart, can have meaningfully different XIRRs today.

Whether the amount still matches the goal. A ₹5,000 SIP set up in 2019 to fund a goal was sized against 2019 prices and a 2019 income. If neither the goal's cost nor your income has been revisited since, the SIP amount is running on autopilot toward a target it was never updated to actually hit — a step-up that never happened is invisible in every single monthly confirmation, forever, until you go looking for it.

How this instalment fits your overall allocation. One confirmation email only ever describes one fund. If you're running SIPs across six schemes, no single email — and often no single app — shows you what the combined result actually looks like: are you accidentally 70% concentrated in one category because six "different" fund names all quietly hold the same large-cap stocks?

Why this is easy to miss for years

None of this is hidden. It's just that a monthly confirmation is designed to answer one narrow question — did this transaction go through — and investors quietly start treating "the SIP is running" as equivalent to "the plan is on track." Those are two different facts, and the gap between them is exactly where SIPs that looked fine every single month for years turn out to have drifted well off the original goal by the time anyone checks.

What actually answers these questions

None of this requires digging through a year of confirmation emails by hand. Upload your CAS to our CAS tracker once — takes a couple of minutes — and every SIP instalment across every fund, every AMC, every folio you've ever held gets parsed into one place automatically. From there, the portfolio dashboard answers the exact three questions your inbox never does: your real, personal XIRR on every holding (not the fund's headline return — yours, calculated from your actual instalment dates and amounts), your true allocation across every fund combined (so a hidden 70% large-cap overlap across six "different" schemes actually shows up), and — this is the one most tools skip entirely — a per-transaction Rate Journey for every fund: every single instalment plotted against the fund's NAV history, so you can see, transaction by transaction, exactly which months bought you units cheap and which bought them expensive, not just an average blended into one number at the end.

A monthly confirmation email was only ever built to confirm one transaction. This was built to answer the question that email was never designed to ask: is the whole plan actually working?

The one-line takeaway

A SIP confirmation tells you the SIP happened. It was never going to tell you whether the SIP is still the right SIP — that's a question worth asking yourself deliberately, at least once a year, because nothing in your inbox is going to ask it for you.
